Job Summary
The Personal Banker will drive and deliver exceptional retail banking performance through the provision of excellent customer service, business development, relationship management, and operational excellence. The role is responsible for growing the bank’s retail customer portfolio while ensuring compliance with banking regulations and internal policies.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Customer Service
The successful candidate will:
• Handle customer queries and complaints related to account opening, loan applications, and card services, ensuring timely resolution.
• Escalate unresolved customer issues to the Prestige Branch Manager where necessary.
• Build effective relationships with internal service providers such as Operations and the KYC Helpdesk to ensure quick resolution of customer requests.
• Direct customers to the most appropriate service channels including ATMs, cashiers, drop boxes, and digital banking platforms.
• Notify customers when cheque books, debit cards, and other account materials are ready for collection.
• Inform customers when loan applications have been approved and encourage timely loan drawdowns.
• Assist customers in banking halls by addressing quick inquiries and directing them to the appropriate service points.
• Ensure customer information materials and banking forms are adequately stocked within the branch.
Sales and Business Development
• Participate actively in product promotion and sales campaigns.
• Achieve and exceed assigned sales and customer acquisition targets.
• Maintain accurate records of sales performance and customer interactions.
• Manage personal product and channel sales targets in line with branch objectives.
• Provide customers with information and guidance on suitable banking products and services.
• Refer customers to specialist teams where advanced product expertise is required.
• Build strong relationships with branch staff to encourage customer referrals.
• Work closely with Customer Advisors to identify customers eligible for Prestige Banking services.
• Complete account opening documentation and submit applications for processing.
• Conduct financial analysis and statement reviews for loan applicants.
• Communicate account opening approvals and welcome new customers to the bank.
Branch Operations Support
• Support the opening and closing of cashier tills alongside the Branch Manager or Branch Operations Manager.
• Authorize transactions above teller limits when required.
• Act as branch cash custodian by monitoring cash levels and ensuring adequate cash availability.
• Coordinate cash replenishment and excess cash transfers in line with branch procedures.
• Perform additional duties assigned by management.
Operational Risk and Compliance
• Ensure all account opening, loan processing, card applications, and mandate changes are completed accurately.
• Maintain high standards of operational excellence and compliance.
• Ensure all new accounts meet Know Your Customer (KYC) requirements and regulatory standards.
• Escalate unresolved KYC issues and service delays to the Branch Manager.
• Comply with all Anti-Money Laundering (AML) regulations and Absa Bank operational policies.
• Conduct branch snap checks and other control activities as assigned.
• Adhere to Absa’s Enterprise Risk Management Framework and internal risk policies.
Qualifications and Experience
Education
• Further Education and Training Certificate (FETC) in Business, Commerce, Management Studies, or a related field is required.
Skills and Competencies
• Excellent customer service and relationship management skills.
• Strong sales and business development capabilities.
• Good understanding of banking products and services.
• Knowledge of KYC and Anti-Money Laundering requirements.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced banking environment.
• Strong attention to detail and compliance standards.
