About the Organization

Uganda Civil Aviation Authority is the government body responsible for regulating civil aviation in Uganda and managing Entebbe International Airport alongside 13 upcountry aerodromes. UCAA operates in accordance with the Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs) of the International Civil Aviation Organization.

Job Purpose

The Air Traffic Management Officer – Trainee will undergo structured theoretical and practical training in air traffic services in line with ICAO standards. Upon successful completion of training and assessments, the trainee will qualify and be deployed as a licensed Air Traffic Controller.

Role of an Air Traffic Controller

An Air Traffic Controller (ATC) ensures the safe, orderly, and efficient movement of aircraft within assigned airspace or aerodromes. The role involves:

• Issuing clearances and instructions to pilots.
• Maintaining safe separation between aircraft.
• Coordinating with adjacent control units.
• Managing emergency situations.

This career requires strong concentration, communication skills, sound judgment, and the ability to perform effectively in high-pressure, shift-based environments.

Key Responsibilities

• Undergo job orientation within the Directorate of Air Navigation Services.
• Study aviation industry regulations and ICAO standards.
• Attend and successfully complete technical ATC training at an Approved Training Organization (ATO).
• Undertake supervised On-the-Job Training (OJT).
• Apply technical air traffic control skills under supervision.
• Perform safety responsibilities in line with the UCAA Aviation Safety Handbook.
• Carry out any additional duties assigned by supervisors.

Minimum Requirements

Academic Qualifications

Applicants must possess:

• A Bachelor of Science (Hons) degree in one of the following disciplines:
  • Physics
  • Mathematics
  • Geography
  • Statistics
  • Computer Science
  • ICT
  • Engineering
  • Surveying
• A Principal Pass (A–C) in Mathematics and/or Physics at A-Level.
• Credit passes in English, Mathematics, Physics, and Geography at O-Level.
• Applicants must be 26 years or younger at the application deadline.
• A copy of the National ID must be attached.

Desirable Requirements

• Willingness to stay in Entebbe and work shifts including nights, weekends, and public holidays.
• Willingness to be posted to upcountry aerodromes when required.
• Readiness to undergo medical examination.
