About the Organization
Uganda Airlines is the national carrier of Uganda, revived from its earlier operations (1977–2001) and relaunched in August 2019. The airline plays a strategic role in connecting Uganda to regional and international destinations.
Job Summary
Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Chief Operations Officer (COO) is responsible for overseeing the airline’s day-to-day operations, ensuring efficient service delivery, operational excellence, and continuous improvement. The role coordinates key departments including Technical Services, Ground Operations, Flight Operations, and the Operations Control Centre, while deputizing the CEO.
Key Responsibilities
1. Safety, Security & Risk Management
- Ensure operational policies are developed, communicated, and fully implemented.
- Maintain safety records and ensure compliance with aviation regulations.
- Liaise with departments to resolve safety and security challenges.
- Monitor risks and implement mitigation measures.
- Coordinate safety committees and recommend relevant training.
2. Operations Strategy
- Develop and implement operational strategies across departments.
- Monitor airline performance using scorecards and key metrics.
- Benchmark operations against global airline standards.
- Lead regular performance review meetings with senior management.
- Optimize routes, schedules, and operational efficiency.
3. Budgeting & Financial Control
- Participate in preparation and monitoring of operational budgets.
- Ensure financial accountability and compliance with approved budgets.
- Support timely approvals and cost control measures.
4. Communication & Feedback
- Provide operational insights to leadership and staff.
- Promote staff engagement and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Collaborate with Commercial and PR teams on stakeholder communication.
- Support preparation of board papers and strategic reports.
5. Relationship Management
- Maintain strong partnerships with key aviation bodies including
International Air Transport Association,
International Civil Aviation Organization, and
Uganda Civil Aviation Authority. - Engage with government ministries and international stakeholders.
6. Compliance & Systems Management
- Ensure full operational compliance across departments.
- Oversee staff training and regulatory requirements.
- Work with IT teams to ensure efficient operational systems.
7. Additional Duties
- Perform any other duties as assigned by the CEO.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Aviation, Engineering, Operations, Business, or related field.
- Minimum of 10 years’ senior management experience in the aviation industry.
- Experience as COO, Accountable Manager, or similar leadership role is an added advantage.
- Strong knowledge of flight operations, safety, maintenance, and airline systems.
- Proven leadership experience in a reputable airline (international/LCC experience preferred).
