About the Internship

SNV Uganda is seeking a Country Finance Intern to gain practical experience in finance operations within an international NGO.

The six-month learning placement will provide hands-on exposure to cash management, payment processing, financial documentation, accounting systems, grant financial monitoring and financial reporting.

The intern will work under the guidance and supervision of the Country Finance Officer.

Key Responsibilities

Cash Management and Bank Reconciliation

• Learn how to maintain and reconcile daily cashbooks.
• Support monitoring and management of bank accounts.
• Learn procedures for month-end cash counts and surprise cash counts.

Expenditure Review and Coding

• Review expenditure requests and receipts for accuracy and completeness.
• Learn how to correctly code expenses.
• Support preparation of compliant payment vouchers.
• Gain exposure to expense report auditing and approval processes.

Financial Documentation and Filing

• Maintain and archive vouchers and supporting documents in chronological order.
• Retrieve accounting records for management, audits and third parties.
• Support proper financial record keeping.

Accounting Systems

• Gain practical experience using SAP.
• Support timely posting of financial transactions.
• Assist with project invoice entries and understand the monthly accounting cycle.

Grant Financial Monitoring

• Assist in reviewing grantee financial reports.
• Learn donor financial compliance requirements.
• Support monthly tracking of implemented activities.
• Verify receipt and posting of related invoices.

Financial Reporting

• Support compilation of data for project-level financial reports.
• Assist with accuracy checks and variance analysis.
• Learn processes related to open-item accounts, accruals and payments.

Invoice Processing

• Learn the process of linking invoices to the procure-to-pay (P2P) system.
• Support invoice submission for approval.
• Follow up on invoice approval processes.

Qualifications

Applicants should have:

• A degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Studies or a related field.
• Some prior exposure to finance or accounting through coursework, internship or volunteer work.
• Experience with international NGOs is an added advantage.
• Familiarity with accounting software and basic accounting principles.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Good interpersonal and communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
• Willingness to learn and occasionally travel.
• Ability to adapt to different working environments.
• Good computer literacy and strong documentation skills.

Internship Terms

This is a six-month learning placement intended to build practical skills and professional experience.

The internship does not constitute employment, but provides exposure to international NGO financial management systems and practices, with mentoring and supervision from the Country Finance Officer.
